What is the Universal Credit Benefit?
Universal Credit is a new Government Benefit that will eventually replace most existing benefits including tax credits and other forms of means-tested financial assistance. It was initially rolled out in parts of North West UK on 29th April 2013 as part of the Government’s overhaul of the welfare system and is to be made available to the rest of the general public between October 2013 and 2017. It is thought that Universal Credit (UC) will help those who genuinely cannot work or are earning a low income. Call the Universal Credit Contact Number for information including how your current benefits will be affected.
It will differ from current benefits in that you won’t lose all your benefits at once as soon as you start work. The amount you are paid will vary proportionally according to your personal circumstances and the amount of hours you work. Like a wage, your UC will be paid monthly into your bank account. Any contributions toward the cost of rent will be paid directly to you and you must pay the landlord yourself.
Which Benefits will be affected by Universal Credit?
- Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA).
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
- Income Support.
- Working Tax Credit.
- Housing Benefit.
- Child Tax Credit.
If you’re currently in receipt of one of the above benefits and would like to know if and how you will be affected by UC, call the Universal Credit Helpline on 0843 515 8656.
