  • An employee earning above £155 a week
  • Self-employed and making a profit of £5,965 or more a year

National Insurance Classes

There are different classes of National Insurance. This depends on the amount of money that you earn and your age.

  • Class 1 is when you are earning over £155 a week and is taken by your employer.
  • Class 1A or 1B means that your employer pays this money on your behalf because you receive certain benefits.
  • Class 2 is for those who are self-employed and earning over ££5,965.
  • Class 3 is whereby you voluntarily pay national insurance to make up for gaps in your employment after not paying it for a while.
  • Class 3A is voluntary also and is used to top-up your pension.
  • Class 4 is for those who are self-employed who are earning over £8,060 per year.

How Much Will You Pay

The amount of National Insurance that you pay is totally dependent on your current situation. If you are working and earning more the £155 per week then you will be paying National Insurance. Similarly, if you are working for yourself but earning more the £8,060 per year then you will be in class 4. Each different class has to pay a different amount that is suitable for their specific situation.
