What is the ESA?
The ESA stands for Employment Support Allowance. It is a form of benefit that can be claimed within the UK if you are unable to work due to illness or disability. This used to be known as the incapacity benefit but was replaced with the ESA, which includes a strict assessment.

- details of any other money you are getting, such as benefits or sick pay
Types of Financial Support
There are two different types of ESA. These are:
- Contribution-based ESA – usually you get this if you’ve paid enough National Insurance contributions (National Insurance credits can count for part of this if you get them)
- Income-related ESA – usually you get this on its own or on top of contribution-based ESA if you’re on a low income
You may be sanctioned if you do not attend your interviews or do work related activity as agreed with your advisor. The reduction can continue for up to 4 weeks after you start going back to your interviews.
Hardship payments may be paid if your income-related ESA is reduced because of a sanction or fraud. This is money that you do not have to pay back. This payment is a reduced amount of your ESA which is usually around 60%.

The support groups are for all people that are judged to be unable to work. The interviews are intended to help sick or disabled people move into work easily.

You may be able to claim for ESA due to an illness or disability that stops or affects your ability to work. You can get it if you are under state pension age, not getting statutory sick pay or maternity pay and are not receiving job seeker’s allowance. To appeal a decision made you will need to contact HMRC and explain your concerns with the decision.You will need to ask for a mandatory reconsideration within a month of the date of a decision about This is a mandatory step in appealing your claim. They will look into it and reassess your claim. If your grievance is still not addressed then it may be worth escalating your claim to an independent tribunal.
I have had a letter saying that my benefits are going to change, what does this mean?
